Padres bring back reliever Stammen

The Padres have agreed to terms with reliever Craig Stammen on a two-year, $4.5 million contract. The club confirmed the move Saturday.
Stammen, 33, signed a Minor League deal with the Padres last season and got off to a rough start, posting an 8.49 ERA in April. He turned things around, however, posting a 2.23 mark in the final five months to finish with a 3.14 ERA in 80 1/3 innings.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Padres designated infielder José Rondón for assignment.

Stammen served in numerous roles in 2017, thriving most when he entered games with men on base.
Padres GM A.J. Preller said shortly after the '17 season ended that the team was interested in bringing Stammen back.
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Stammen can earn $100,000 for every five appearances between 20 and 50, another $150,000 if he reaches 55 games and another $150,000 if he reaches 60 appearances.
