Arcia leaves game vs. Cubs for birth of twins

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia had the best possible reason for leaving Sunday’s 8-5 win over the Cubs in the fourth inning, and for missing the next few games in Miami.

“He’s got two baby girls,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “It happened pretty fast.”

Arcia rushed to the hospital in time to be with fiancée Elena for the birth of their twin girls, and Counsell said everyone was healthy. The Brewers will be without Arcia for a few days and were considering placing him on the paternity list, Counsell said, which opens some possibilities for a corresponding roster move before Monday’s series opener at Marlins Park.

The team was still working through those options, which are complicated. With third baseman Mike Moustakas still unable to hit because of a sore left hand and wrist, Arcia’s absence will leave the team with no extra middle infielders. The only such player on the 40-man roster, Tyler Saladino, remains down with a left shoulder injury and has not been participating in baseball activities.

Of the players on the current roster, Hernán Pérez and Cory Spangenberg can cover shortstop in Arcia’s absence. Counsell did not specify how many games they expect him to miss.

“Look, for anybody who’s got that going on, it’s definitely part of ‘away from the field,’” Counsell said. “We’ve got all good news from the hospital, so it’s a great day. It’s the best day of your life.”
