O's mourn loss of Minor Leaguer Luis Andrés Ortiz Soriano
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Orioles Minor League pitcher Luis Andrés Ortiz Soriano has died after a battle with cancer, the team announced Sunday afternoon. He was 20.
“Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the passing of Minor League pitcher Luis Andrés Ortiz Soriano,” the team said in a statement. “We will miss his passion and love for the game of baseball, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.
“Luis was an inspiration to all who knew him, especially as he courageously battled cancer. We hope that the cherished and treasured memories of Luis will be a comfort for his family and friends during this devastating time.”
Ortiz, who signed with the Orioles in July 2019, played for the club’s Florida Complex League team in ‘21. He did not play in ‘22.
Manager Brandon Hyde began his Sunday session with the media by offering his condolences to Ortiz’s family.
“Sad news last night,” Hyde said. “From all of us here on our Major League staff and the players, we just want to give our condolences to the Ortiz family.”
