Selby selected over Bowman on O's Wild Card Series roster

BALTIMORE -- As widely expected, the Orioles opted to go with 14 position players and 12 pitchers for their American League Wild Card Series roster vs. the Royals.

The most surprising decision made by Baltimore was that right-hander Colin Selby got the final spot in the bullpen over righty Matt Bowman, who was excluded from the roster. The 26-year-old Selby made only three appearances for the O’s during the regular season, tossing four scoreless innings.

Albert Suárez, who started the regular-season finale at Minnesota on Sunday, is not on the roster. The 34-year-old righty would likely start Game 1 of the AL Division Series vs. the Yankees on Saturday, should the Orioles advance.

Rookie left-hander Cade Povich, who had a 5.20 ERA in 16 starts, is likely to shift to Baltimore’s bullpen for the postseason.

Because the O’s are carrying 14 position players, rookie infielder Jackson Holliday, corner infielder Emmanuel Rivera and rookie outfielder Heston Kjerstad will all be on the bench.

The AL Wild Card Series begins with Game 1 at Camden Yards on Tuesday (4:08 p.m. ET, ESPN2). Game 2 is set for Wednesday (4:38 p.m. ET, ESPN), while a potential Game 3 would be held Thursday (4:08 p.m. ET, ESPN).
