Notes: Ahmed's knee, Locastro's pushups

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed was scratched from Monday's starting lineup due to right knee soreness.

The D-backs and Giants wound up tying, 2-2, at Scottsdale Stadium.

"It's going to be day to day," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "I just figured this point in Spring Training, let him get ahead of that. And I'll just keep you guys posted on his progress over the coming days, but nothing that we're overly concerned about at this point."

One indication that the injury is not serious is that as of now, Lovullo said there are no plans for Ahmed to have any tests like an MRI.

"I just think it's just a normal Spring Training ... part of the aches and pains that all these athletes go through," Lovullo said.

More pushups

To pass the time while being quarantined following a positive COVID-19 test, outfielder Tim Locastro has taken to doing pushups.

Lovullo said that Locastro's goal was to do 1,500 in a day.

"I spoke to him today; he feels great," Lovullo said Monday. "He got it to 800 pushups yesterday and he's a little stir crazy. So, I know he's excited to get back out here. But we're going to follow the protocols and the steps necessary that will allow him to get back into this environment comfortably for us and for him."

No Bumgarner on Wednesday

Madison Bumgarner's turn in the rotation rolls around Wednesday when the D-backs play the Dodgers in a night game at Camelback Ranch, but Seth Frankoff will get the start against Clayton Kershaw.

Rather than give the Dodgers another look at Bumgarner, the D-backs will have him throw in a simulated game earlier in the day.

Game notes

• Caleb Smith started and pitched well Monday, tossing three hitless innings. The left-hander walked one and struck out three in his second spring start.

• Left-hander Alex Young looked sharp once again, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning three in three scoreless innings.

Young has now thrown five scoreless innings this spring.

"One of the things that stands out about him when he's throwing the ball very well is the cleanliness of his innings," Lovullo said. "It's just pounding the zone, strike one. You look up and he's walking off and he's thrown eight or nine pitches."

Up next

Luke Weaver will make his second start of the spring for the D-backs on Tuesday afternoon when they play the Rockies at Salt River Fields.

Also scheduled to pitch are Corbin Martin, J.B. Bukauskas, Ryan Buchter, Stefan Crichton and Tyler Clippard.

This will be Clippard's first spring action since signing with Arizona on Feb. 26.
