Wellington Diaz hasn’t pitched above High-A ball yet in his professional career, but the slider he broke off on Tuesday night looked big league ready.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Hudson Valley righty snapped in a 2-1 pitch to Brooklyn’s Rowdey Jordan that frisbeed hard toward the back foot of the lefty hitter. The Cyclones leadoff man swung and missed, then had a brief conversation with catcher Austin Wells, the fourth-ranked Yankees prospect.
Jordan was called out on strikes one pitch later.
Diaz twirled two perfect innings as part of the Renegades’ 5-3 win, his best appearance of the season. The 25-year-old needed just 22 pitches (17 for strikes) to retire all six men he faced and notched two strikeouts.
New York originally signed Diaz out of the Dominican Republic in March 2017. Over five pro seasons, Diaz has made 74 appearances (17 starts) at the Rookie, Single-A and High-A levels and has combined to go 15-16 with a 4.70 ERA. The righty’s current assignment with Hudson Valley is his first at the High-A level since he made two relief appearances with then-Class A Advanced Tampa in 2019 and posted a 2.35 ERA.
Baseball’s No. 95 overall prospect, Wells aided in the Rengades’ victory, chipping in two singles and scoring a pair of runs in his second straight multihit effort. Cooper Bowman, the Yanks’ No. 25 prospect, doubled and drove in a run while Carlos Narvaez connected on his first home run of the season for Hudson Valley.
