Meet the player dealt to Giants in Alex Cobb trade

Nearly a month after the July 30 Trade Deadline, the Giants and Guardians completed the deal that sent veteran right-hander Alex Cobb to Cleveland.

The Giants announced Monday that they acquired infielder Nate Furman as the player to be named later in the trade, which also netted them left-hander Jacob Bresnahan, who is now ranked as San Francisco’s No. 18 prospect per MLB Pipeline.

Furman, 23, is currently on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain, but he batted .294 with an .829 OPS and seven home runs in 50 games between High-A and Double-A before getting hurt in late June. A fourth-round Draft pick out of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2022, Furman primarily played second base in the Cleveland organization and is viewed as a plus runner, going 47-for-54 in stolen-base attempts over his first two years in pro ball.

The Giants have already gotten their first looks at Bresnahan, who’s gone 0-3 with a 14.21 ERA over his first five starts at Single-A San Jose. The 19-year-old southpaw was a 13th-round Draft pick of the Guardians in 2023, but he’s added about two mph to his fastball since turning pro and landed on the Giants’ radar after recording a 2.70 ERA with 66 strikeouts over 50 innings in his first 12 outings between the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League and Single-A this year.

Cobb, 36, gave up five earned runs over 10 1/3 innings (4.35 ERA) in two starts for Cleveland before going back on the 15-day injured list with a fractured fingernail. The 2023 All-Star didn’t throw a single pitch for the Giants this year, as he missed most of the season while rehabbing from hip and shoulder injuries and didn’t make his 2024 debut until Aug. 9 with Cleveland.
