Betts gets engaged to girlfriend of 15 years
After picking up his second World Series ring, first with the Dodgers, last fall, superstar outfielder and pro bowler extraordinaire (his bowling stats even appear on Baseball-Reference) Mookie Betts just went out and got another ring: An engagement one that he slipped on girlfriend Brianna Hammond's finger.
The two have been together for 15 years after having initially met in middle school, putting all those high school romances to shame. The couple also share a child together, Kynlee Ivory Betts, who was born in November 2018.
"Brianna has been by my side since we were teenagers," Betts said to People. "Together we've grown mentally, physically, and spiritually. She is my best friend, mother of my child, my lover, and my soon-to-be wife."
But Betts didn't just pop the question while squatting in front of the TV. Oh no -- he had some help from CC Sabathia and his family. After recently being honored with the 2020 LegaCCY Award from CC and Amber Sabathia's PitCCh In Foundation, Betts told Hammond that there was a special dinner to celebrate with the Sabathias in Nashville, Tenn.
So, Betts and the Sabathias got to work putting together a small awards ceremony. As People reported, Betts accepted the award and then called up Hammonds to the stage to "personally thank her." That's when the ruse was revealed. The Dodgers star then read a poem he wrote -- move over, Lord Byron -- before he popped the question.
The engagement isn't the only change to the family, either. The couple also got a new puppy, Draco, over Christmas.
