Also on Tuesday, it was reported that medical documentation indicated Japanese two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who joined the Angels last week, has a "first-degree sprain" in the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.
MLB.com's beat reporters were on the scene to capture the latest on these stories, as well as news from each team on Day 2:
Angels: General manager Billy Eppler confirmed that Ohtani did receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow in October, which was administered by his former club, the Nippon-Ham Fighters.
"It didn't bother us," Eppler said. "There are clubs that use that as kind of like preventative medicine."
Yahoo! Sports reported that medical reports showed a sprain in Ohtani's UCL, which is the least severe of UCL injuries but could lead to Tommy John surgery in the future. Eppler said, "Based on the readings of the MRIs there are no signs of acute or new trauma in the elbow. His elbow looked consistent with pitchers at his age and usage level. We were pleased with the results of the physical and we are happy to have the player." More >

A's: Though catcher Bruce Maxwell is awaiting legal proceedings stemming from an October arrest on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct, the A's have him penciled in as their starting backstop and are not looking for other options. General manager David Forst said the club is focused on adding an outfielder and left-handed reliever through trade or free agency. More >
Astros: Houston has a closer with a proven track record, but right-hander Ken Giles gave up 10 runs in 7 2/3 innings during the postseason. While general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch reiterated their confidence in Giles' ability to bounce back and have key role in the late innings next season, adding a reliever remains a priority for the Astros. More >
Blue Jays: While the Blue Jays have been linked to free-agent outfielders such as Carlos González and Jay Bruce, general manager Ross Atkins said the club's strong core allows for it to take things slow this offseason. Braves: General manager Alex Anthopoulos said he is not looking to give up prized pitching prospects, which are plentiful within Atlanta's organizational ranks. Much like the franchise's position in the early 1990s, when other teams were inquiring about young talents Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery, the Braves may choose instead to further evaluate their pitching prospects' development moving forward. More >
Brewers: General manager David Stearns has been focused on adding pitching, and on Tuesday he said the Brewers have made offers to multiple free-agent hurlers. One of the pitchers they could go after in the trade market is the Rays' Chris Archer, and MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal notes Milwaukee is a "team to watch" on that front. More >

Cardinals: The Cardinals' pursuit of an impact bat this offseason continues. General manager Michael Girsch said the Cards are optimistic on having the framework of a deal in place by the end of the Winter Meetings. More >
Cubs: Kyle Schwarber drove from his home in Tampa to the Winter Meetings and met with Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer. Hoyer said Schwarber looked like he was "in the best shape of his life." Could he bat leadoff again? Chicago also reached a deal for left-hander Drew Smyly. More >

D-backs: The D-backs have been getting calls about their starting pitchers and middle infielders. General manager Mike Hazen said parting with one of his front-line starters would require a plan be in place to replace them. Sources told MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan that the Rangers have inquired about Zack Greinke, and USA Today reported the Yankees have interest in Patrick Corbin. More >
Dodgers: With the Dodgers looking to be financially conservative this offseason in order to minimize luxury-tax exposure, general manager Farhan Zaidi said trade activity is more likely than moves on the free-agent market. The priority is replenishing the bullpen, particularly after Brandon Morrow signed with the Cubs. More >
Giants: The Giants have a "sense of urgency" at the Winter Meetings, said general manager Bobby Evans. San Francisco has reportedly been active on several fronts but has not being able to make headway with the Marlins on trades for Ozuna or Yelich, while also engaging with the Reds about acquiring Billy Hamilton. Indians: The Tribe hopes to re-sign free-agent first baseman Carlos Santana -- and it will have the opportunity to present a counter offer if he gets a proposal he likes from another club -- but waiting on Santana's status has Cleveland in a holding pattern with respect to the position.
