MLB shuts down Spring Training facilities
MLB has decided to immediately shut down all Spring Training facilities in Arizona and Florida until they have been disinfected and are deemed safe for reopening. The news, first reported by USA Today Sports, was confirmed by MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal.
USA Today Sports also reported that players and staff will not be readmitted to the facilities, unless they test negative for COVID-19.
COVID-19 cases have increased over the last two weeks in certain states, including Arizona and Florida. Some players have tested positive for the coronavirus, including five on the Phillies' 40-man roster and one on the Astros' 40-man roster. One player on the Blue Jays' 40-man roster developed COVID-19 symptoms.
Prior to MLB's decision to close all Spring Training facilities, some clubs announced closure of their facilities earlier Friday, either after some players and/or staff reported coronavirus symptoms or out of precaution, including the Phillies (Clearwater, Fla.), Blue Jays (Dunedin, Fla.), Rangers (Surprise, Ariz.) and Giants (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
