Mets' bats silenced by Crew as playoff margin narrows

MILWAUKEE -- If the Mets are to defy expectation and qualify for the postseason, they’ll need to do more at the plate. A lot more.

The Mets were shut out, 6-0, by the Brewers on Saturday in a crucial game -- for them, at least -- at American Family Field. Despite Milwaukee having nothing tangible left to play for as they prepare for the postseason, Brewers pitchers limited the Mets to two hits and no runs.

How badly the loss damages the Mets will depend upon the results of Saturday’s other key games in the National League. The Braves beat the Royals to move a game ahead of the Mets in the race, and the Diamondbacks were playing the Padres. Only two playoff spots remain for a trio of contenders in New York, Atlanta and Arizona.

Jose Quintana extended his career-best scoreless streak to 25 2/3 innings, but it ended when Joey Ortiz hit a two-run single in the fourth inning. For the Brewers, that proved to be enough.
