Wise serving as Halos' interim pitching coach
Angels manager Joe Maddon said on Tuesday he could not comment on the ongoing investigation into suspended pitching coach Mickey Callaway, but he confirmed that bullpen coach Matt Wise is serving as the interim pitching coach in Callaway’s absence.
The Angels suspended Callaway on Feb. 2, and began an investigation in conjunction with Major League Baseball into allegations that Callaway directed inappropriate and lewd behavior toward five women in the sports media industry, which became public in an article in The Athletic on Feb. 1.
Angels general manager Perry Minasian and Maddon both said they could not comment on how long the investigation will last. Callaway initially denied any wrongdoing, which is why the Angels and MLB had to conduct the investigation.
Wise, 45, was the club’s bullpen coach, so it made sense to promote from within. Last year was Wise’s first season as bullpen coach with the Angels, but he’s been with the organization for 16 seasons, including two years as the club’s Minor League pitching coordinator from 2018-19.
Dom Chiti, who followed Minasian from the Braves organization to the Angels this offseason, will serve as bullpen coach. Chiti, 62, has been a bullpen coach for the Indians, Orioles and Rangers. He was Atlanta's director of player development in 2019 before being reassigned within the organization in '20.
