JUPITER, Fla. -- Sean Burnett, a left-handed reliever who last pitched in the big leagues in 2016, is making a comeback attempt with the Marlins. Miami signed the 35-year-old to a Minor League contract on Saturday, and he is currently participating in Minor League camp.
"We're trying to build some depth there," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of adding Burnett. "Moving Jarlin [Garcia] to the rotation has changed our depth. So we'll see where we go with that."
The Marlins also announced that they've made a Minor League trade with the Reds, acquiring infielder Eric Jagielo for cash considerations.
Burnett broke in with the Pirates in 2004, but he hasn't pitched in the Majors since making three appearances with the Nationals in '16. In recent years, he has dealt with left elbow injuries. Last season, Burnett signed a Minor League deal with the Phillies, but he was released before the '17 opener.

A native of Dunedin, Fla., Burnett has a 3.52 ERA in 380 big league games. In his career, left-handed hitters are batting .225 off him.
With the Marlins, Burnett will be eased into action. Miami is thin on lefty relievers with MLB experience, and Burnett could get a big league chance at some point during the year. He will open the season in extended spring training.
Jagielo, 25, was a first-round Draft pick of the Yankees in 2013. The former University of Notre Dame standout played at Double-A and Triple-A with the Reds in 2017, combining for a .204 batting average with a .323 on-base percentage. He provides Minor League depth.
