Marlins claim 2 pitchers; 3 players go on IL

The Marlins on Monday claimed right-hander Justin Shafer and lefty Josh D. Smith off waivers from the Reds. The club also placed first baseman/designated hitter Garrett Cooper, outfielder Harold Ramirez and right-hander José Ureña on the injured list.

The transactions came after MLB announced the Marlins' home opener against the Orioles at Marlins Park had been postponed.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Network that Tuesday’s game also was postponed and noted that depending on COVID-19 test results, the Marlins could return to playing as early as Wednesday at Baltimore.

Shafter has 40 games of MLB experience, and the right-hander has logged 48 innings. With the Blue Jays in 2019, he had a 3.86 ERA in 39 2/3 innings.

Smith, a left-hander, was briefly with the Marlins in 2019, appearing in six games in September. In limited action, he had an 8.31 ERA in 4 1/3 innings.
