In his first chance at shortstop this year, Manny Machado pulled off an incredible sliding play with the game on the line in the 10th inning of the Padres' contest against the Nationals on Sunday at Nationals Park.

Starting shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. exited with an injury on a fielder's choice that put two runners on for Washington with no outs, forcing the Padres to move Machado to short and bring Wil Myers in from left field to man third. San Diego reliever Matt Wisler retired the next two batters before Howie Kendrick sent a sharp grounder up the middle. Machado ranged to his left, corralled the ball with a crisp twirling slide and popped up to fire to first to retire Kendrick and send the game to the 11th.

“I’m just trying to make the play there and not let them walk us off there in that situation,” Machado said. “We had to scramble around in the field, and we got lucky we got out of it.”

The tremendous play ultimately went for naught when Matt Adams slugged a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th to win it 7-6 for the Nationals.
