Severino takes encouraging step toward return
NEW YORK -- Luis Severino threw 33 pitches in a Minor League rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, allowing two runs and striking out two in an inning of work. He then threw another 12 pitches in the bullpen.
“Sevy was good,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Saw him this morning, it was kind of like the first Spring Training game. He said he felt good, flashed some good things, but I would put it akin to a first Spring Training game. ... [He] said he felt good this morning, normal [postgame] soreness and stuff. So hopefully another really good step for him, where next time out, maybe we get him to three innings and go from there.”

Boone said that Severino’s next rehab start will likely be Friday, on normal rest, and also with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since the team made the postseason and has games remaining.
Severino has not pitched in the Majors this season, as he’s dealt with right rotator cuff inflammation and a Grade 2 right lat strain.
In other injury updates, CC Sabathia had his right knee drained and got an injection, but he said he doesn’t know yet what the next steps will be or what his timeline might look like. Sabathia was placed on the injured list on Saturday with right knee inflammation, his third injured list stint this season for the same ailment.
Stephen Tarpley, who pitched 19 2/3 innings for the Yankees at the Major League level this year, will long toss Monday and throw another side session Tuesday as he works his way back from a left shoulder impingement that landed him on the injured list on August 11.
“I think Tarpley’s getting close to being an option for us again,” Boone said.
Jonathan Holder, who has been on the injured list since August 10 with right shoulder inflammation, will begin a throwing program Monday, according to Boone. This will be his first time throwing since the injury.
