LSU's Doughty comes up clutch in victory over Oklahoma
LSU second baseman Cade Doughty, the No. 35 player on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Draft prospects for 2022, came through in the clutch not once, but twice in the Tigers’ 5-4 victory over Oklahoma in the Shriners Children’s College Classic on Friday night in Houston.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Doughty lined a two-out, two-run homer over the short right-field wall in Minute Maid Park to tie the score at 3-3. Two innings later – and with the seventh-ranked Tigers down to their last strike, trailing 4-3 – Doughty smashed a ball down the left-field line for an RBI double.
LSU would walk off the Sooners in the 11th inning on a no-doubt solo shot from shortstop Jordan Thompson.
Doughty had three hits in the win -- all for extra bases. The homer was his fourth of the young season. Through 10 games, he is batting .414 with 11 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs. Doughty has also struck out only five times in 41 at-bats. The Louisiana native was selected by the Tigers in the 39th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
All games in the seventh annual Shriners Children’s College Classic this weekend will be broadcast by MLB Network and streamed on MLB.com and the MLB app. Doughty and LSU will face No. 1 Texas on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. ET. Oklahoma will open the day against UCLA at 12:05 p.m. Baylor and No. 17 Tennessee are scheduled to start at 4:05 p.m.
