Giants right-hander Logan Webb took another step toward distinguishing himself as one of the top starters in baseball on Monday, when he was named a National League Cy Young Award finalist for the first time in his career.
Webb is one of three nominees for the prize, joining the Padres’ Blake Snell and the D-backs’ Zac Gallen. The winner, as voted on by the Baseball Writers' Association of America before the postseason began, will be announced on Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. PT on MLB Network.
Webb, 26, was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for the Giants, as he recorded a 3.25 ERA while leading the Majors with a career-high 216 innings in 2023. He was one of only five starters to reach the 200-inning threshold this past season and became the first Giants pitcher to lead the Majors in innings since Gaylord Perry in 1970.

Despite Webb’s consistency, the Giants routinely struggled to support his stellar outings, going only 15-18 over his 33 starts this year. Still, his durability was invaluable for the club, which relied on only two traditional starters -- Webb and fellow right-hander Alex Cobb -- for much of the 2023 campaign.
Webb also drew NL Cy Young votes last year, when he placed 11th in the BBWAA balloting. While he’s now guaranteed a top-three finish, Webb has acknowledged that the award is likely to go to Snell, who led the Majors with a 2.25 ERA in 2023.
"He's going to win the Cy Young,” Webb said after tossing his second career complete game on Sept. 25. “He's the best pitcher in baseball."
The Giants haven’t had a Cy Young winner since Tim Lincecum captured the award in back-to-back seasons in 2008-09, though Webb has a chance to develop into a perennial contender after signing a five-year, $90 million extension in April.
