Suzuki exits after HBP but joins celebration

LOS ANGELES -- A scary scene unfolded at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night after Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki was hit by a 94 mph fastball from Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler that deflected off his left wrist and struck his face, forcing him to depart Game 5 of the National League Division Series in the seventh inning.

Shop for postseason gear: Suzuki immediately dropped to the ground, drawing medical attention from Nationals athletic trainer Paul Lessard. Suzuki was slow to get up, but ultimately walked off the field on his own power. He was replaced at first base by pinch-runner Yan Gomes.
The Nationals eventually won in 10 innings, 7-3, on Howie Kendrick's grand slam, and Suzuki felt well enough to join the team for its postgame celebration.
General manager Mike Rizzo seemed confident that the catcher would be available for the NL Championship Series, which starts Friday in St. Louis.

“I iced him down with a little champagne, so I think he’ll be OK,” said Rizzo. “If he doesn’t have a bone showing, he’ll be playing, I guarantee you.”
