OAKLAND -- Slugger Khris Davis exited the A's 5-4 win in 13 innings against the Reds on Wednesday night in the fifth due to the lingering effects of a left hip contusion he sustained making a catch against the railing in left-field foul territory in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The A's were off on Monday, and Davis was a late scratch from Tuesday night’s lineup. He started at DH on Wednesday and went 0-for-1 with a walk before Kendrys Morales pinch-hit for him in the fifth.

“He felt OK in batting practice, but no matter how you swing in BP, you can’t simulate the swings you take in the game,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “He just wasn’t comfortable, and I didn’t want to make it worse.”

Davis is expected to get Thursday off, and the club will see how he feels on Friday before determining whether a stint on the injured list is necessary.

The injury comes as Davis is slumping at the plate. He's baseball’s most prolific home run hitter since the start of the 2016 season, but Davis hasn't homered since April 12, batting .190 with three extra-base hits over that stretch.
