Upton robs HR, hits blast in 10th to lift Halos

SAN DIEGO -- Justin Upton lifted the Angels with both his bat and his glove on Monday, making a game-saving catch in left field and crushing a two-run home run to cap a four-run 10th inning that powered the Halos to a 6-3 win over the Padres in their series opener at Petco Park.
With the game tied, 2-2, in the 10th, the Angels mounted a rally against reliever Craig Stammen and scored the go-ahead run with the help of a communication breakdown in the Padres' outfield. After Eric Young Jr. reached on a fielder's choice and pinch-hitter Shohei Ohtani walked, Kole Calhoun lifted a fly ball to right-center field that split outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe and bounced in for a ground-rule double, scoring Young from second.

David Fletcher brought in an insurance run with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze, and Upton then crushed a first-pitch slider out to left-center field for his 25th home run of the season and a 6-2 lead.
"He had a hell of a night," left-hander Andrew Heaney said.
Eric Hosmer homered to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the 10th, but Blake Parker retired Margot on a flyout and A.J. Ellis on a groundout to end the game.
The late comeback ensured that the Angels didn't squander a strong start from Heaney, who gave up two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out six over 7 1/3 innings. Heaney's effort couldn't have come at a better time for the Angels' bullpen, which had been asked to pitch a combined 14 2/3 innings over the club's previous two games.

"I think we did a good job on the mound tonight," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Andrew Heaney was terrific."
Heaney took to the mound in the eighth inning aiming to protect the Angels' 2-1 lead, but he fell into trouble after surrendering back-to-back singles to Freddy Galvis and Jose Pirela, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Hosmer then sent a deep drive to left field, but Upton leapt at the wall to rob him of a three-run home run. Hosmer had to instead settle for a sacrifice fly that tied the game.

"I felt like I had a chance at it," Upton said. "Once I got to the track, I kind of felt where I was, and I had a better gauge for it. I just went up and caught it."
The Angels put the go-ahead run at second base in the ninth after Upton delivered a leadoff double to left field, but reliever Kirby Yates struck out Albert Pujols, Andrelton Simmons and Jose Miguel Fernandez swinging to leave him stranded.

Upton went 2-for-5 with two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to six games. He his batting .417 (10-for-24) with four home runs with nine RBIs over that span.
"Everybody likes hits," Upton said. "I'll take it."
The Angels jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs off left-hander Clayton Richard in the third. Josè Briceño opened the scoring by blasting an 0-1 fastball into the left-field seats for his third home run of the season. Young then hit a dribbler out in front of the plate for an infield single and advanced to second on Calhoun's one-out single.

After taking third on Fletcher's groundout, Young scored on a wild pitch to push the Angels' lead to 2-0.
Working quickly and efficiently, Heaney retired 18 of the first 19 batters he faced, the exception being Galvis' home run in the third inning, which cut the Angels' lead to 2-1.

The Padres tested him in the seventh after Wil Myers drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on Christian Villanueva's one-out infield single, but Heaney induced popouts from Austin Hedges and Franmil Reyes to emerge from the jam unscathed.

After Briceno doubled to begin the 10th, Young attempted to bunt him over to third, but the ball was hit softly in front of the plate, allowing catcher Hedges to quickly field it and fire to third. Briceno was initially ruled safe, but the call was overturned after replay review showed that he was tagged out by Galvis before reaching the bag.

Right-hander Jaime Barría (7-7, 3.59 ERA) will take the mound on Tuesday as the Angels and Padres continue their three-game Interleague series at 7:10 p.m. PT at Petco Park. He will be opposed by San Diego right-hander Brett Kennedy (0-1, 13.50 ERA). Barria, who is set to make his first career appearance against the Padres, is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in his last three starts for the Angels.
