Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was removed from Game 6 of the World Series in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday because of a positive COVID-19 test, Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed after the Dodgers defeated the Rays, 3-1, to clinch their seventh championship.
“It’s a bittersweet night for us,” Manfred said during a postgame interview on FOX. “We’re glad to be done. I do think it’s a great accomplishment for our players to get this season completed. But obviously we’re concerned when any of our players test positive. We learned during the game that Justin was positive.”
Turner, who was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, was replaced at third base by Edwin Ríos, with the Dodgers leading, 2-1. Mookie Betts homered in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final Dodgers run.
Following the game, Turner tweeted a statement:
“Thanks to everyone reaching out! I feel great, no symptoms at all. Just experienced every emotion you can possibly imagine. Can’t believe I couldn’t be out there to celebrate with my guys! So proud of this team & unbelievably happy for the City of LA #WorldSeriesChamps”
Until Turner’s positive test, the Dodgers had no known positive tests since the beginning of the season.
