PHILADELPHIA -- Justin Crawford wore a Phillies jersey as he toured Citizens Bank Park on Monday afternoon. It had his last name and No. 3 on the back.
“[Bryce] Harper was joking with me and saying, 'You’ve got to give up that No. 3,'” Crawford said. “I was like, ‘You’ve got that, man. Don’t worry.’ That’s the number I wore in high school, but I’ll give that up in the blink of an eye.”
Crawford signed with a $3,894,800 bonus as the 17th overall pick in the 2022 Draft, which was $100,000 over the slot value.
Crawford, 18, batted .503 (77-for-153) with 17 doubles, eight triples, five home runs, 52 RBIs, 20 stolen bases and a 1.379 OPS in 42 games during his senior season at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound outfielder said he plans to arrive in Clearwater, Fla., on Tuesday. Crawford's top priority is getting accustomed to professional baseball and getting stronger, and he said he would like to add about 10 pounds of muscle before next spring.
Crawford’s father is Carl Crawford, who played 15 years in the big leagues with the Rays, Red Sox and Dodgers. As a kid, Justin Crawford said he modeled his game after his father, but he's his own player now.
“I never really model my game after anyone,” he said.
The Phillies also signed 14 of their other 19 picks. They hope to sign at least three of the remaining four picks as early as Wednesday.
