Alvarado, Phillies reach deal to avoid arbitration

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies announced Friday that they avoided salary arbitration with hard-throwing left-hander José Alvarado.

The parties agreed to a $3.45 million deal for 2023, according to a source. The club has not confirmed the numbers.

Right-hander Seranthony Domínguez is the only remaining Phillies player still eligible for arbitration. Domínguez seeks $2.9 million in salary this year, while the Phillies offered $2.1 million. Previously, the Phillies avoided arbitration with Rhys Hoskins ($12 million), Gregory Soto ($3.925 million), Ranger Suárez ($2.95 million) and Edmundo Sosa ($950,000).

Alvarado posted a 7.62 ERA in his first 17 appearances before the Phillies optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in May. He returned in June and became one of the best relievers in baseball. In his final 42 regular-season appearances, Alvarado posted a 1.66 ERA, struck out 64 and walked 14 in 38 innings. Batters whiffed at his cutter 55.7 percent of the time, the ninth-highest whiff rate of any pitch by any reliever in the Majors (minimum 50 swings).

Phillies pitchers and catchers have their first official workout in Clearwater, Fla., on Thursday.
