The Rays placed left-hander José Alvarado on family medical emergency leave and recalled Andrew Kittredge from Triple-A Durham prior to their 12:10 p.m. ET game against the Tigers on Wednesday at Tropicana Field.
The 23-year-old Alvarado is 1-3 with a 2.58 ERA with three saves in 38 1/3 innings of relief for Tampa Bay this season. He's recorded 42 strikeouts with 19 walks and finished seven games. He picked up the win while working two scoreless innings against the Tigers on Tuesday.
Kittredge has appeared in 14 games for the Rays this season, his latest coming on July 8 against the Mets at Citi Field. The righty recorded 12 strikeouts with nine walks in 18 2/3 relief innings this year. Kittredge is 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA in 28 1/3 innings pitched for Triple-A Durham in 2018. He converted both of his save opportunities in the Minor Leagues, starting one game.
Kittredge was acquired by the Rays on Nov. 18, 2016 as part of a three-player deal with the Mariners.
