Infielder Jordy Mercer and the Nationals have agreed to a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training, a baseball source told MLB.com on Saturday. The club has not confirmed.
Mercer, who will enter his 10th big league season, spent time with the Tigers and Yankees last year, batting a combined 4-for-20. The 34-year-old is best remembered for his years with the Pirates, whom he helped reach the postseason from 2013-15. He was the everyday shortstop during most of that period.
Mercer’s most productive season came with Pittsburgh in 2016, when he hit .256 with a career-high 59 RBIs.
