Hicks has successful Tommy John surgery
ST. LOUIS -- Jordan Hicks’ Tommy John surgery was successful on Wednesday morning, Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said. It was a full UCL reconstruction, using a tendon from Hicks’ left hamstring to repair the elbow.
The timetable for Hicks’ recovery is still unknown.
“Timetable is as same as it is for any Tommy John surgery a day after,” Girsch said. “It’s on the order of 12 months, but the actual specifics will depend on how it goes. Whether it’s a little shorter or a little longer, we won’t know for months, until he starts making progress in his rehab.”
Triple-A Memphis represents in PCL All-Star game
Right-hander Jake Woodford and infielder Rangel Ravelo were named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team, which will face the International League All-Stars in the Triple-A All-Star Game on MLB Network at 8 p.m. CT on July 10.
Woodford, the Cardinals' No. 24 prospect, will be the second straight Redbird to start the All-Star Game after Dakota Hudson started it in 2018. Woodford was the top vote-getter among all pitchers and currently ranks third in the PCL with a 3.39 ERA and sixth with 74 strikeouts. He was named PCL Pitcher of the Week on Monday after throwing seven scoreless innings.
Ravelo, who made his Major League debut with St. Louis last week, is leading the Redbirds with a .326 batting average and had a 19-game hitting streak in May, hitting .449 during that stretch.
Cards host the Cup
Busch Stadium played host to more than the A’s on Wednesday night.
The Stanley Cup and players on the championship-winning Blues were honored before the Cardinals took the field. Head coach Craig Berube was introduced before Alex Pietrangelo, Ryan O’Reilly and Pat Maroon came riding in from right field on a utility cart with the Cup in hand and “Gloria” -- the Blues’ song of the season -- playing in the stadium. Even Cardinals' mascot Fred Bird got a chance to hoist the Cup.
Berube and the players visited the St. Louis clubhouse before the game and talked with Cardinals players as the Stanley Cup sat beside the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series trophy.
“It’s a long-awaited championship to St. Louis, and we’re super excited to see it, be a part of it, congratulate them and rub it a little bit, see where it takes us,” manager Mike Shildt said.
Worth noting
• Mike Mayers (right lat strain) and Ryan Helsley (right shoulder impingement) will throw one inning in a rehab appearance in Memphis on Wednesday night.
