Top 5 prospects among Angels' NRIs

ANAHEIM -- The Angels announced they are inviting 21 non-roster players to Major League Camp this Spring Training, including their top five prospects in Jo Adell, Griffin Canning, Brandon Marsh, Jahmai Jones and Matt Thaiss.
The other invitees are right-handers Miguel Almonte, Alex Meyer, Matt Ramsey, Jeremy Rhoades and Forrest Snow; catchers Dustin Garneau, Jack Kruger, Julian Leon, Keinner Pina, Roberto Pena; infielder Wilfredo Tovar; outfielders Peter Bourjos, Brennon Lund, Jarrett Parker and César Puello and two-way player Jared Walsh.
Walsh, 25, is a career .294/.360/.496 hitter in 362 games as a right fielder and first baseman in the Minors and has some pitching experience with a 2.08 ERA in 10 appearances. Walsh, 25, reached Triple-A last year and was a starting pitcher and first baseman at the University of Georgia, but hasn't started in the Minors.
Bourjos, who began his career with the Angels in 2010 and played four seasons with the club, has a chance to make the roster as an extra outfielder. He's still regarded as a solid defender in center, but is coming off a down year that saw him hit .205/.239/.364 in 36 games with the Braves. Parker has shown power from the left side in limited playing time with the Giants from 2015-17, hitting .257/.335/.456 in 135 games, but rates as a below-average corner outfielder defensively.
Adell, ranked as the club's No. 1 prospect and the No. 15 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, headlines the group of prospects as an athletic center fielder coming off a breakout year that saw him hit .290/.355/.543 with 20 homers and 15 stolen bases in 99 games across three levels, including Double-A. But Adell, 19, isn't expected to crack the Opening Day lineup, although there's a chance he could make his debut late this season.
Canning, the organization's No. 2 prospect and No. 72 overall by MLB Pipeline, is closer to the Majors after reaching Triple-A in his first year of professional ball last year, but also isn't expected to make the team out of camp.

Marsh, the club's No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline and No. 98 overall, possesses a combination of speed and power as well as strong defense in center, but ended last season at Class A Advanced Inland Empire, so he's still a ways away from the Majors.
Jones (No. 4 prospect) and Thaiss (No. 5) are both closer to the Majors, as Jones finished last year at Double-A Mobile and Thaiss ended at Triple-A Salt Lake. Jones is a speedy second baseman while Thaiss is a power-hitting first baseman, and both could make their debuts late in the season.
Other prospects who will be in big league camp include second baseman Luis Rengifo (No. 10 prospect) and left-hander Jose Suarez (No. 7), as they are both on the 40-man roster. Rengifo will compete for the second base job, while Suarez made 17 starts at Triple-A last year with a 4.48 ERA and is getting close to Major League ready.
Pitchers and catchers report to the club's Spring Training complex in Tempe, Ariz. on Feb. 12 with the first workouts set for Feb. 13. The position players report on Feb. 17 with the first full-squad workout on Feb. 18.
