The Royals received positive news on Friday. Right-handers Jesse Hahn and Kyle Zimmer, and infielder Adalberto Mondesi, have made positive steps to get back on the field.
Hahn (right shoulder impingement syndrome) and Zimmer (left trapezius muscle strain) logged bullpen sessions. If things go well for Hahn, he will start throwing batting practice soon. For Zimmer, it was his first bullpen session.
Hahn has made five appearances out of the bullpen and allowed five runs in 3 1/3 innings, while Zimmer appeared in 11 games and yielded five runs across 13 1/3 innings.
Mondesi (right oblique strain) is ready to hit right-handed. He will take batting practice from that side of the plate. From the left side, he is not quite ready, according to manager Mike Matheny. Mondesi has yet to play a regular season game because of the injury.
Mondesi is chomping at the bit and wants to play. Asked if the switch-hitting Mondesi could just swing the bat right-handed, Matheny said it’s not worth the risk. The Royals want Mondesi to swing from both sides of the plate.
“We have gone so far to get us to the point to where we are right now,” Matheny said. “Why risk going backward? As badly as we would like to see him, he had made great [progress]. … The medical team said it has been cautious. … That is the best way to go about it.”
A healthy Mondesi would add speed to the lineup. During the previous two seasons, Mondesi had a combined 13 triples and 67 stolen bases.
