Segura to have MRI for right quad strain

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies will learn Wednesday if Jean Segura is headed to the injured list.
He strained his right quadriceps running hard to first base in the second inning in Tuesday night’s 10-7 loss to the Giants at Citizens Bank Park. It is concerning enough that he will receive an MRI exam.
“Obviously, we’ll have a better idea of what we’re dealing with,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi said.
The Phillies lost shortstop Didi Gregorius and utility infielder Ronald Torreyes on Monday because of a sore right elbow and COVID-19 protocols, respectively. Brad Miller moved from first base to second base to take Segura’s place in the third. Rhys Hoskins entered the game to play first. After a double-switch in the eighth, catcher Andrew Knapp finished the game at second.
It showed how shorthanded the Phillies are in the infield. Hoskins, Miller, Alec Bohm and Nick Maton are the only healthy infielders on the 26-man roster. Scott Kingery is the only healthy infielder remaining on the 40-man roster, and he is struggling at the team’s alternate site in Allentown, Pa.
Girardi said Gregorius was only available Tuesday in an emergency.
“He’s day to day,” Girardi said. “He is better today. We’ll evaluate tomorrow. If he’s not able to play tomorrow, I would think then it would be Friday. But he was an emergency tonight. And I’m not sure if we put him in what would have happened. We want that elbow joint to calm down. It’s better than it was, but we don’t feel unless it’s an emergency that we want to use him.”
If Gregorius returns, Miller and Maton could play second base.
Segura entered the game batting .345 with one home run, five RBIs and an .836 OPS. He was hitting so well that Girardi just moved Segura into the No. 2 hole after hitting sixth and seventh most of the season.
