Jazz makes sweet grab, eats sour snack
Making just the second start of his big league career, Marlins rookie shortstop Jazz Chisholm Jr. turned heads with his defense in Miami's 5-4 loss on Sunday at Tropicana Field, ranging into shallow center field and laying out to steal a hit away from the Rays’ Nate Lowe in the bottom of the eighth.
With the Marlins shifting, Lowe’s popup was hit almost directly over Chisholm’s head, but the 22-year-old was able to keep the ball in his sights before leaving his feet for a spectacular catch in front of center fielder Starling Marte.
After the inning, Chisholm celebrated the sweet grab -- and his first career hit earlier in the game -- with some sweet (and sour) snackage, breaking into a bag of Sour Patch Kids. Chisholm, the Marlins' No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, tweeted before Sunday’s game that he was bringing the candy to the dugout with him, but it remains to be seen if he’ll make it a habit after his sugar-fueled snag.
