PHILADELPHIA -- The Mets-Phillies rivalry heated up a notch on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.
Tempers flared in the top of the eighth inning in New York's 4-3 victory, and minutes later Jay Bruce crushed a two-run homer into the second deck in right field to break a tie.
Bruce also hit a solo home run to right field against Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff in the fourth inning to cut the Mets' deficit to 2-1.
"Tonight, it just happened to be me," Bruce said. "But it's going to be plenty of other guys plenty of other times all year long. I'm really, really excited because we have that type of team."

Phillies right-hander Edubray Ramos made things interesting in the top of the eighth when he threw a 96-mph fastball over the head of Asdrúbal Cabrera. Ramos, who said the pitch was not intentional, might have had Cabrera's Sept. 22, 2016, walk-off home run against him on his mind. Cabrera celebrated with an emphatic bat flip.

But Ramos ultimately walked Cabrera, and two batters later Bruce knocked his shot to right.
Phillies first baseman Brock Stassi hit a solo homer to right-center field in the ninth against Addison Reed to make it 4-3. It was the first hit of Stassi's career. But with a runner on first and two outs, Reed struck out Howie Kendrick looking to end the game and pick up his second save.
"I feel like we should have won that game," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "We had them on the ropes in the first inning. We got a couple runs, but he didn't cash in with a big hit right there. The rest of the game was ours to take, but we just couldn't add on."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
deGrom struggles early, recovers: Jacob deGrom allowed one run in 15 innings last season against the Phillies, but he allowed two against them in the first. The Phillies loaded the bases with one out, when Michael Saunders singled to right field to score the game's first run. deGrom then walked Cameron Rupp to force in the second run. deGrom allowed six hits, two runs, two walks and struck out three in six innings.
"Early on, I didn't have good command," deGrom said. "After that, it's pitch by pitch. … It's about not thinking too far ahead and focusing on getting that guy out who's up at that time." More >

Error proves costly: The Phillies and Royals entered the game as the only teams in the Majors without an error. But the Phillies' 58-inning errorless streak ended with no outs in the seventh, and it cost them the lead. Curtis Granderson hit a ball to Phillies second baseman César Hernández, who turned and threw to first. But the ball got away from first baseman Stassi, allowing Bruce to reach third. Bruce scored on Neil Walker's sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Mets:Matt Harvey (1-0, 2.70 ERA) looks to build on his successful 2017 debut when he returns to the mound for a 7:05 p.m. ET game Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. Harvey looked sharp in his first start back from thoracic surgery, relying heavily on his slider in a win over the Braves.
Phillies: Right-hander Clay Buchholz (0-0, 7.20 ERA) makes his home debut on Tuesday night against the Mets. He allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings last week in Cincinnati.
