Scioscia: Barria to make debut Wednesday
Jaime Barría, one of the Angels' top pitching prospects, will make his Major League debut on Wednesday, manager Mike Scioscia announced Monday. Barria will start the Angels' series finale against the Rangers in Arlington.
The 21-year-old right-hander is ranked as the organization's No. 7 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Barria just made his 2018 Minor League season debut on Saturday, throwing a pair of innings for Triple-A Salt Lake. He will join the Angels on Tuesday in Texas.
Barria split his 2017 season across three levels -- Class A Advanced, Double-A and Triple-A -- and had a 2.80 ERA in his 26 total starts, with 117 strikeouts in 141 2/3 innings.
The Angels find themselves in need of starting pitching due to another rash of injuries to their rotation. JC Ramirez was diagnosed with a torn UCL on Monday and appears to be headed for Tommy John surgery, while Matt Shoemaker is also on the disabled list with a right forearm strain.
The Angels will also need starting pitchers for Thursday and Friday's games against the Royals. Andrew Heaney, who has been out with elbow inflammation, would be a candidate to return and start one of those games, while someone like Nick Tropeano could start the other.
