PITTSBURGH -- As expected, Giants third baseman Jae-Gyun Hwang received an avalanche of text and voice-mail messages to congratulate him on homering in his Major League debut Wednesday.
Anybody who reached out to Hwang shouldn't be surprised if he hasn't responded. He said Friday through his interpreter, Mark Min-Hyung Kim, that he received 1,000 messages on his Korean cell phone and 200 on his American phone. Thursday's scheduled off-day here enabled Hwang to catch up on his correspondence.
Perhaps the most famous Korean that Hwang heard from was Dodgers left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu, who kept his message sweet and simple: "Nice."
At 29 years and 335 days, Hwang became the oldest Giant in franchise history to clobber a home run in his Major League debut.
