Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones’ outstanding home run robbery against the Nationals on Saturday was recognized as the MLB Play of the Week presented by W.B. Mason on Monday.
In the third inning of Saturday’s game at Comerica Park, Jones tracked Victor Robles’ towering fly ball to left-center field, used the wall as a foothold and made a full-extension grab to pull back the would-be home run.
Jones’ amazing catch, which even received a tip of the helmet from Robles, kept the game scoreless, and Detroit went on to win, 7-5.
Jones is the first Tiger to earn the Play of the Week Award, which is new for the 2019 season. Robles himself actually won two weeks ago after making a fantastic diving catch on the warning track in left-center field against the White Sox on June 11.
The Play of the Week Award has been won by an outfielder in all but three weeks this season, and the Brewers’ Lorenzo Cain is the only player to win it more than once.
