Canning leads no-hitter for Double-A Mobile

Griffin Canning worked the first five innings as a trio of Double-A Mobile pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter Saturday in a 1-0 win against Montgomery.
It was the second no-hitter in franchise history for the BayBears, who came within three outs shy of a combined no-hit bid on Thursday.
Canning, the Angels' No. 8 prospect, struggled with his control in the outing, issuing six walks and throwing 44 of his 84 pitches for strikes, but still managed to keep Montgomery out of the hit column and pick up his first professional win. He recorded one strikeout and generated eight of his 15 outs on the ground.
The start marked Canning's third at the Double-A level and fifth as a pro after being selected by the Angels in the second round in 2017. The 21-year-old right-hander began his pro debut in the Class A Advanced California League, where he turned in a pair of scoreless starts with Inland Empire en route to a quick Double-A promotion. Since arriving in the Southern League, Canning has pitched to a 3.46 ERA in 13 innings across three starts.
Matt Custred replaced Canning on the mound and added three more scoreless frames to keep the no-hit bid alive. The 24-year-old righty posted one walk and one strikeout in the multi-inning outing. Ryan Clark struck out two of the three batters he faced to earn the save and seal the no-hitter.
Angels No. 9 prospect Matt Thaiss' third home run of the season, a fifth-inning solo shot, accounted for all of Mobile's offense in the victory. He was one of two BayBears players to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 to improve his average to .274.
