Barrios, a native of Maracay, Venezuela, originally signed with Milwaukee as a non-drafted free agent in 2021 and brings impressive tools to the Rays' organization. A strong defender with excellent range and speed, Barrios also handles the bat well. He makes contact often, as evidence by a strikeout rate of around 10% and an on-base percentage of .367 this season.

Civale, 29, went 4-9 with a 5.17 ERA in 27 starts for Tampa Bay over the past two seasons. The Rays were set to have a surplus of starters by the end of the month with former top prospect Shane Baz just about built up in Triple-A after his Tommy John rehab and Jeffrey Springs nearly done with his TJ rehab assignment. Baz is likely to take Civale's spot in the rotation for now.
