NEW YORK -- Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres went to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday thinking he would be back in the starting lineup against the Blue Jays. But he was on the bench for the second consecutive day. Andrew Velazquez remained in the starting lineup, hitting ninth for New York.
“I very much expect Gleyber [to be] back in there,” manager Aaron Boone said. “I very much expect Gleyber to be a central figure moving forward for us, but felt like today I wanted [Velazquez] back in there. He certainly played a role in helping us win games.”
Torres said he can’t control what is done to the lineup, but he said he will be ready to come off the bench. Torres acknowledged that he is having a disappointing season. Entering Wednesday’s action, Torres has a slash line of .253/.325/.347.
Even on defense, Torres has not been at his best. He has made 15 errors and it seems most of those have come on routine plays.
“I expected more from [myself]. I don’t do too much this season,” Torres said. “The postseason is soon. Hopefully, we make the postseason … and I’ll try to do really good things there and help my team to win.
“Sometimes, when bad things happen, players get a little frustrated and forget about enjoying the game. I try to learn everything like that. I’ll [try to] play better for my team.”
Asked if he was hurt, Torres said, “No. The season is crazy. I prepare myself really well to prepare for a good season. Hopefully I have next year and a lot of years in my career to figure out how I can do better. It’s part of experience. I learned about this year and next year, [I hope] to do really good things and try to be better.”
