Giants-Rox game postponed; split DH set for Saturday
DENVER -- The series opener of a four-game set between the Giants and Rockies at Coors Field, originally scheduled for Thursday at 6:40 pm. MT/5:40 PT, was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday. Game 1 is scheduled for 12:20 p.m. MT/11:20 a.m. PT, followed by Game 2 at 6:10 p.m./5:10 p.m. Separate tickets will be required for each game.
Every game is critical for the Giants at this juncture in the season, with San Francisco in the thick of a tight National League Wild Card race. But given that the club will travel to Arizona for two games against the D-backs following the series at Colorado, then head to Los Angeles for four against the Dodgers, a series win -- or even a sweep -- of the last-place Rockies is vital to San Francisco's playoff hopes. The Giants have won 16 of their past 17 meetings with Colorado.
- Giants games remaining (16): at COL (4), at AZ (2), at LAD (4), vs. SD (3), vs. LAD (3)
- Standings update: The Giants (75-71) currently occupy the third NL Wild Card spot. While the Reds and D-backs (both 76-72) have the same winning percentage as San Francisco (.514), the Giants own the tiebreaker over both teams.
Right-hander Logan Webb was slated to take the mound for San Francisco on Thursday, and Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Webb will start Friday’s contest, which is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MT. Kapler also said that outfielder Michael Conforto, who has been sidelined with a left hamstring strain, will be in the lineup Friday.
Rockies right-hander Chase Anderson was scheduled to make the start against San Francisco on Thursday. Colorado manager Bud Black said Anderson will start Friday. Despite winning just one of their last 17 games against the Giants, the Rockies are coming off a series win over the Cubs, who currently occupy the second NL Wild Card position -- 2 1/2 games ahead of the Giants.
“Bark at the Park” was also scheduled for Thursday night at Coors Field, and it has been rescheduled for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Prior to the nightcap, there will be a special pregame ceremony for the Blake Street Bombers as part of the Rockies’ ongoing celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Hall of Famer Larry Walker, as well as Ellis Burks, Dante Bichette and Vinny Castilla will take part, and there will be a postgame drone show.
