Pena will avoid DL with sprained ankle

OAKLAND -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that the collision between Ramiro Pena and Mac Williamson on a popup to shallow right field during Wednesday night's game resulted in Pena spraining his ankle.
The Giants elected not to place Pena on the disabled list, but Bochy said the infielder would miss about five to seven days.
The Giants purchased the contract of infielder Grant Green from Triple-A Sacramento. Green started at second base and hit seventh Thursday night.
To make room for Green, the Giants optioned relief pitcher Chris Stratton to Sacramento and designated right-hander Jake Smith for assignment.
Green was hitting .294 (70-for-238) in 65 games with Sacramento. He hadn't played in a game in almost two weeks before Thursday, though, after getting four stitches on his right kneecap. The stitches were required because Green was hit by Williamson's bat, after it slipped from his grip and traveled into the dugout while they were both with Sacramento.
Green got his stitches out Wednesday and said he feels no restriction anymore. It is satisfying news for Bochy, who has four infielders on the disabled list.
"We're in a tough situation right now," Bochy said. "[Green's] got some experience and so we brought him up. He was going to start today in Sacramento, so why not start him here? He's got experience. He's been here."
Green was drafted by the A's in 2009 and has played multiple positions in the infield throughout his career. He said he's most comfortable playing at second base, given the amount he's played the position the last couple years.
His start at second base comes just a day after Ruben Tejada made his Giants debut at third base. Tejada went 0-for-4 and committed one error at third, before shifting to second base after Pena left the game in the fifth.
The Giants committed three errors in Wednesday night's 7-1 loss to the A's and have committed 13 in their last 12 games.
