Pagan, Pence sit with ailing hamstrings

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hampered by sore hamstrings, left fielder Angel Pagan and right fielder Hunter Pence were out of the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Chicago Cubs.
Both were on day-to-day playing status, said Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who observed the injuries were considered minor and that each player was available to pinch-hit. The ailing hamstrings were Pagan's left and Pence's right.
Pagan showed no hint of leg trouble in Friday night's series opener, stealing two bases. But Bochy noticed during Thursday's series finale at San Diego that something might be amiss with Pence.
"I saw him hobble a little bit going down the line," Bochy said.
The absences resulted in utility infielder Kelby Tomlinson occupying left field. It was his first experience playing outfield in six professional seasons. Moreover, though Tomlinson worked out in center field last fall during the instructional league, he didn't practice at all in the outfield corners. Tomlinson, 25, guessed that he hadn't played left field since middle school.
