Giants leave Meetings with work to be done

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Giants spent the Winter Meetings continuing their offseason-long efforts to make an impact move. But Giancarlo Stanton and Shohei Ohtani eluded them shortly before the Meetings began, going to the Yankees and Angels, respectively. Then Miami traded Marcell Ozuna to St. Louis a day before the Meetings ended. Giants officials left the Meetings with general manager Bobby Evans' acknowledgment of "a sense of urgency to upgrade the roster" ringing in their ears.
What's next
Everything. The Giants still need outfield help. One player might barely suffice; two would be ideal. The Giants want a defensively competent center fielder and an offensively proven corner outfielder.

They remain on the lookout for a third baseman who's skilled enough to keep Pablo Sandoval on the bench and Christian Arroyo hungry.
Though the bullpen is an area that teams typically address last, the Giants won't want to pay too high a price through trade or in free agency if the market for competent relievers starts to spin out of control. So they'll also monitor this area carefully, given their need for a consistent setup man.

The Giants plucked hard-throwing Julian Fernandez, 22, from the Rockies' organization with the No. 2 overall pick. San Francisco also lost right-hander Albert Suárez, who was taken by Arizona.
