Error costly as D-backs fall in walk-off loss

DENVER -- The D-backs entered Monday’s series opener with the Rockies coming off a wild victory over the Brewers in their series finale Sunday. Currently holding the second National League Wild Card spot, Arizona needs every win it can get to maintain that position and reach the postseason.

That means taking care of business against opponents like the Rockies, who have the second-worst record in the league. A 3-2 walk-off loss to Colorado on Monday night didn’t help that cause.

With the game tied, 2-2, in the ninth inning, Brenton Doyle opened the frame with a single to right-center field. He then stole second base, and on a ground ball to second base by Brendan Rodgers, Ketel Marte tried to start a 4-6-3 double play, but shortstop Geraldo Perdomo’s errant throw to first got past Christian Walker, enabling Doyle to score the winning run.

Starter Merrill Kelly, who had to exit his previous start after four innings due to cramping in his right hamstring, was solid over six innings on Monday. He gave up one run on two hits, walking two and striking out five.

But Arizona was limited to just two runs on a two-run homer by Marte in the first inning after Corbin Carroll opened the game with his MLB-leading 14th triple of the season.
