Former pitcher turned cop Varvaro dies en route to 9/11 ceremony

SEATTLE -- Former Major League pitcher Anthony Varvaro was killed on Sunday in an automobile accident while en route to World Trade Center Command for an event to remember the 9/11 attacks.

Varvaro became a Port Authority police officer after a six-season big league career that included stints with the Mariners (2010), Braves (2011-14) and Red Sox (2015).

According to the Daily Voice, Varvaro was killed in a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver. The 37-year-old father of four was traveling to the World Trade Center to serve in the anniversary events.

Varvaro posted a 3.23 ERA over 166 big league appearances. He helped the Braves win the 2013 National League East title when he produced a 2.82 ERA over a career high 62 appearances.
