Tatis has longest active hit streak in Majors
Bill Center, longtime sportswriter for U-T San Diego, is an employee of the Padres.
With an opposite-field, line-drive triple off the right-field foul pole in the ninth inning Saturday night, Fernando Tatis Jr. extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games.
The 20-year-old rookie shortstop now has the longest active hitting streak in the Major Leagues and the longest by a Padre this season.
But Tatis still has a ways to go to match the longest hitting streak by a rookie in Padres history. That record is 34 straight games by catcher Benito Santiago in 1987, also the longest hitting streak in Padres history, the longest by a rookie in Major League history and the longest by a catcher.
Tatis is 19-for-60 (.317) during his active streak with two doubles, a triple, six home runs, 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored. Tatis has also hit safely in 20 of his past 21 games.
Notes
• Right fielder Hunter Renfroe was 3-for-3 with two doubles, his 31st homer, a walk, four runs scored and two RBIs Saturday night. His solo home run also marked the 300th hit and 200th RBI of his career. And his 31st homer is the fourth highest single-season total by a Padres outfielder; Greg Vaughn has the record with 50 in 1998. Renfroe is 10-for-34 (.294) over his his past nine games.
• Center fielder Manuel Margot tied his season highs with three hits and three RBIs Saturday night. He was 3-for-4 with his 10th homer. It was also Margot’s fourth homer in his past seven games. He is 7-for-19 (.368) during the run with seven RBIs and seven runs scored.
• Right-hander Kirby Yates recorded his 33rd save Saturday night. He still leads the Major Leagues in saves, although Saturday’s was only his third since the All-Star break and his first at Petco Park since June 28 against the Cardinals.
• Righty Andres Munoz issued two walks and had two strikeouts in a scoreless inning Saturday night to pick up his first Major League win.
