ARLINGTON -- Royals starter Eric Skoglund seemed especially emotional after losing to the Rangers on Friday night, and now we know why: the lefty was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday with a left ulnar collateral ligament sprain, an injury that often leads to Tommy John surgery and a year-plus of rehabilitation.
Skoglund will undergo an MRI, likely Monday, after the Royals return to Kansas City from Texas. He said his elbow has been bothering him for much of the season, but he tried to avoid being shut down until after Friday's game, "the realizing point" when he talked to the Royals trainers.
"It's something that's been eating at me for about six weeks -- it's just frustrating," Skoglund said. "You put in so much work to help this team win, and then you do get the opportunity and something like this happens. It's not fun. Now it's just, I want answers and hopefully we get something out of [the MRI] and we go from there."

In nine starts this season, Skoglund is 1-5 with a 6.70 ERA.
"I was able to throw through it," Skoglund said. "I had some swelling but I was able to throw, my [velocity] was still there even throughout yesterday. So it's like the velo's still there but something's wrong."
The 25-year-old still has his rookie status after making seven appearances, including five starts, last year. The Royals chose him in the third round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
The Royals activated rookie lefty Eric Stout on Saturday to take Skoglund's place. Stout has made two Major League appearances, allowing three earned runs in two relief innings in late April. The Royals won't need to make a decision about who will take Skoglund's spot in the rotation until Wednesday, which would have been his next turn.
