The injury bug keeps biting the Braves.
Already this past week, Atlanta has placed left-handers Drew Smyly and Max Fried and outfielder Cristian Pache on the injured list, and a day after a 5-2 win over the Cubs, outfielder Ender Inciarte (left hamstring) and Sean Newcomb were placed on the injured list on Saturday.
The club recalled right-hander Bryse Wilson and selected Sean Kazmar Jr. and left-hander Jesse Biddle. For Kazmar, if he were to make an appearance on Saturday, it would be 12 years and 206 days since his last MLB game.
Atlanta didn't place Ozzie Albies on the IL, but he was out of Saturday's lineup due to calf soreness after a hit-by-pitch on Friday and he'll continue to get treatment throughout the day. Manager Brian Snitker is optimistic that this will be a short stint away from the diamond for Albies. Ehire Adrianza started in place of Albies at second base and batted sixth.
"He's one of the toughest kids I've ever been around," Snitker said. "We'll see where he's at tomorrow and just kind of go day to day with him."
Inciarte, who was making his fourth start of the year, was poised to see his playing time increase with Pache on the shelf with a groin injury. He hit a two-out single to reach base in the fourth on Friday, and he came up limping somewhere between second and third while advancing on Kyle Wright’s double down the left-field line. Inciarte was replaced in center field by Guillermo Heredia.
Inciarte has been a solid contributor for the Braves since joining the club in 2014, though he has been used more in a reserve role over the last two seasons. He is hitting .294 this year with five hits in 17 at-bats.
