ARLINGTON -- Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus pulled off his third steal of home this season in the third inning of a 9-4 loss to the Angels on Tuesday.
With Rougned Odor batting with two outs and runners on the corners, Logan Forsythe broke for second on Jose Suarez's first pitch. It was high for a ball, and catcher Jonathan Lucroy threw down to second. Andrus took off for the plate on the throw, and Angels shortstop Luis Rengifo fired home. Lucroy took the throw and reached back in an attempt to tag Andrus as he slid by. Home-plate umpire Ron Kulpa called Andrus out, but the decision was overturned on review.
Andrus also stole third base in the first inning and second earlier in the third; he now has 19 steals on the season. The last player with at least three swipes of home in one season was the Royals' Jon Nunnally, who had four in 1995.
Andrus is only the fifth player to steal home three times in a season since 1975. In addition to Nunnally, Derrel Thomas (Giants, '75), Paul Molitor (Brewers, '88) and Glenn Braggs (Brewers, '89) did it three times.
Andrus has seven career steals of home, second-most by a player since '75 behind Molitor, who stole home 11 times in his Hall of Fame career.
