Prospect Cabrera sidelined with arm injury

The Marlins on Friday morning announced that Edward Cabrera has been diagnosed with an inflamed nerve in his right biceps. MLB Pipeline's No. 68 overall prospect did report to Jupiter, Fla., for Spring Training, but he is not participating in throwing activities at this time.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said the club found out about the discomfort in the winter when Cabrera was in the Dominican Republic. The 22-year-old right-hander would've been in the mix to round out Miami's rotation.

"Obviously, you're always disappointed when anything sets a guy back a little bit," Mattingly said. "But I think from there we just basically take our time and let this thing take care of itself, or us take care of it. We've got him here in the States, he has been evaluated. We know what we're doing. [He's] already shown improvement, still able to do a lot of things. We will see him we feel like at some point this year, but we're not going to put a timetable on him. He's young. We know he is going to be good. It's just a matter of getting right, get his throwing program going, and then move forward and we'll see where it goes."

Cabrera, who was part of Miami's 60-man player pool in 2020, likely would've made his Major League debut last season had he not dealt with a minor arm injury. He did travel with the Marlins for their National League Division Series against the Braves, because the club had considered inserting him into the bullpen.

In 2019, Cabrera had a breakout campaign between the Class A Advanced and Double-A levels, compiling a 2.23 ERA in 19 starts, with 116 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings. According to MLB Pipeline's scouting report, the belief is Cabrera and top prospect Sixto Sánchez could headline Miami's rotation for years to come.
