Mariners second baseman Dylan Moore was taken out of Wednesday night’s 9-3 loss to the Giants in San Francisco in the eighth inning after taking a 99 mph fastball off his helmet in the bottom of the seventh.
Moore got back to his feet fairly quickly after being dropped by the fastball from Giants reliever Sam Coonrod and took first base after being examined by Mariners head athletic trainer Kyle Torgerson. Moore was then forced out at second on a fielder’s choice and appeared OK while going to the bench, but manager Scott Servais chose to replace him with Dee Strange-Gordon in the field in the following inning.
“Dylan is going to be OK, I think,” Servais said after the game. “You’re always concerned when guys get hit in the head like that. When I got out there, he was on the ground, but he never lost consciousness or anything like that. He was very responsive and no issues, but just precautionary we took him out of the ballgame.
“We’ll monitor him tonight and see if he’s going to be OK tomorrow. But as of right now he says he’s fine and it looks like he’s going to be OK, thank God.”
The 28-year-old has been one of Seattle’s biggest surprises this season as he came into the season fighting for a utility role, but has wound up as a regular starter and is batting .267 with seven homers and a team-leading 11 stolen bases in 33 games.
Moore remained in the Mariners’ dugout after being removed from the game.
“It’s scary any time anybody gets hit in the head like that,” Servais said. “Dylan popped right up and was ready to go. He wanted to stay in the ballgame, but I figured that was enough. Let’s let it calm down and hopefully he feels OK tomorrow. He’s been such an asset for us, playing all over the field and how he’s swung the bat. Hopefully he’s going to be OK.”
